Ballard Locks and Saaaaalmon

This post I am going to mention about two curiosities I discovered in my visit to Ballard which is a neighborhood that I visited at the beginning of my stay in Seattle.

First, the lock which are similar to the ones in Panama. They operate in a special hydraulic system that help the boats pass when the sea level is different. At the end of the locks, there is a part where some Salmons have a kind of museum. In there, it is mentioned that they are strong since they have to swim cross-current and going up in each sea level. I was really surprising.

Second, as I was starving and our teacher recommended us to eat in the “fish and fries” restaurant, Gabby, Armando and I went and have a delicious salmon. Look at the photo above, wouldn’t you like to try it?

A museum and an Island in one day!!

Last Tuesday I went to Burke’s museum. We were in a rush when going there, but our teacher intelligently divided into groups and asked us to pay attention to one part of the museum. My team: Aida, Antonio and Ruy were responsible of the Salmon. I discovered that Salmon is like a venerable fish. They consider that those who decided to live on land had to be responsible for taking care of the water. I found that phrases and made me think about a word that is: brotherhood. Human being really were in balance with the animals, especially with salmon.

I liked having learned about this topic a lot although I could be in the museum for a long time. I would have preferred to spend more time there!!!

Later, we went to Bainbridge Island, the second best place to live in the USA. I loved the ice cream we had even though Eric found an earring in his. It was funny and disgusting at the same time, but at the end I loved my ice cream.
My favorite part was when we travelled by ferry that was the first time and it was terrific!! Wait, wait!! What I loved the most was the above amazing postal that I could take from Seattle. It was amazing and freezing.

Natives in my English Class

Last Wednesday, I met different native speakers. The experience was terrific!! Because they dedicated us some interesting minutes and I realized about different lifestyles in Seattle because of its multiculturalism besides knowing about my classmates’ projects and the natives’ ideas and opinions towards these topics.
Personally, I really loved the chat with James since he has travelled abroad a lot and I discovered that he loves Vietnam and that some news in the TV are completely fake. Also, Teacher Lora told me about Russia and her lifestyle in there and the contrast with her lifestyle in here, Seattle.

I would like to have more practice like this one since I can realize if my speech is clear enough.

Coffee experience!!

My classmates, for this experience, were Aida and Antonio. We went to BURKE’S COFEE. It is a quite ancient inside design. I personally like it. We had to ask some question, but we decided to have some cups of coffee before in order to know how well the coffee was. Antonio asked for the weirdest, Aida for the least popular and I for the most popular. The iced coffee, the green tea latte and the pumpkin spice latte were delicious although a little different in flavor. The first kind of strong, the second not so sweet and the third extremely sweet.

When the hour of leaving the place was coming. We addressed to one lady who kindly answered us some more questions. We discovered that Amanda Knox was there for enjoying some coffee. She was accused of a murderer in Italy. It was the famous person in the coffee. I have no doubt that Seattle has an exquisite and special like for coffee!!!

My two first museums in Seattle

It was the first Cultural Tuesday in Seattle. To start the day we went to the MOHAI museum. It was really interesting to know several facts about Seattle. What caught my attention was to main things. The fire and the modifications in Seattle.
First, there was a theater where a short film was played. It was the story about a big fire that took place in Seattle in 1889. All the story was sung, the lyrics explained that the fire starter in a carpentry because of a glue pot. The fire spread through 42 block and consumed everything. The most amazing thing is that one died in that fire and that all people decided to do some modification while rebuilding Seattle.
The second thing that amazed me was the fact that Seattle has a lot of modification in its natural structure. Some little hills were removed so as to have some more parks and some other wide open areas. There was a part in the museums that shows you what the modifications were.

We also went to SAM (Seattle Art Museum) which was so interesting. Here, I could see some pieces of art from Andy Warhol and Pollock. They both have different type of art, but both are excellent in their work.

Not too much to say about the Veteran's Day

This photo was taken when my assignment for the veteran’s day was given to me and I imagined that the cemeteries would look like the photo but It was a bit different. That day was day off for the school. I am staying with three friends and we decided to go to a cemetery to check how a veteran’s day was celebrated. We went to Capitol Hill’s cemetery and on our way we found two girls who helped us to get there. They were so kind and informative. They were really surprised about the weather and because of the fact that there were not too many flags on the graves.
What I saw was that there were just few graves that had flowers or flags. I remember two special graves which belonged to young soldiers who had recently died. They died really young and their graves were decorated with flags and some flowers.

We found Bruce Lee and Brandon Lee’s grave. They were together surrounded by some bushes and I could see that people left some flowers and coins on their graves.

The AVE!!

Today, my classmates and I went to interview some native speakers to the busiest street named "University Way" better known as "The Ave". We went with the teacher until that place and, later, we made pairs. My partner, for this task, was Gabby.

We went through The Ave and interviewed some sellers. Some of them were really polite, but some were really busy that were not able to answer any question. We had success with three different stores: a barbershop, the Husky shop and a sports store.

We asked several questions. First, their names: Kirk (barbershop), Cari (Husky Store) and Kisha (Sports Center). The second question was the opening and closing hours. They specified all of them and I could notice that on weekdays the service is quiet the same hour, around 9 a.m. The closing hour on weekdays is around 8 p.m. The last question was about the item they sell the most and its price; Kirk mentioned that he offers the service and the cost of it is $17 and that he didn’t like to cut children’s hair; in the Husky Store, they sell the face tattoo very often for only $2.95; finally, in the sports center shop they sell a lot the water bottle because they have a wide price-variety.

I really enjoyed the activity because some of them were really polite and accessible to answer our questions even though they were busy.
